Thanks again to everyone who took part in the survey on live subtitling. It was really interesting to read all your responses and to share your experiences of access on television and at events over the years. I really appreciate the time you spent on this. I’ve been able to find out what matters most to you when you use subtitles and to learn more about some of the concerns you have around using respeaking more widely at live events. And that is exactly what this research is for – finding out what needs to be put in place when using respeaking in this new setting so that the access it provides is of high quality and allows you to relax and enjoy the event.
Respeakers are also central to this research and I have been working closely with them and discussing what will help them work most effectively at an event. They recently attended training on Respeaking at Live Events at Roehampton and had the opportunity to test out new equipment and try out their skills in a new environment. It was a great learning opportunity for everyone involved – myself included.
The next stage in the project is a series of research events that will run through to the start of November. The four events have been designed to test respeaking in a variety of settings – and to pose some challenges for the respeakers! They will include presentations, music, videos, Q&A, performance and a walking tour. And that is where I need your help again – I’m looking for audience members to come along, take part in the event and then share their thoughts and feedback on the access provided.
The event details are as follows:
Quick Fix Theatre – Performance, Presentation, Q&A
Walton on Thames (parking available)
Sunday 1st October, evening
Arts/Theatre Presentation
Walton on Thames
October 11th, evening
Film Event
BFI St Stephen Street
Tuesday 24th October, daytime
Walking Tour
Wellcome Collection
Thursday 9th November evening
If you would like to find out more about being an audience member, email me at [email protected] or click here to download the information sheet. If you are able to attend all four events, that would be wonderful; depending on numbers, it may also be possible to attend one or two events. Do get in touch and then I can answer any questions you may have about taking part.
These initial events are all in the London and Surrey area. In early 2018, there will be a second round of events. I want some of these to be held in other locations around the UK so that more of you can attend. I will be organising those in the coming weeks, so please do contact me to suggest venues near you or to put me in touch with venues you think would be interested in hosting an event.
Have a lovely summer and I look forward to seeing some of you over the next few months.
