Betty crosses Brighton Marathon finish line

Betty Encinales completed the Brighton Marathon on Sunday, raising £1,420 to help make arts and culture accessible to everyone.

Betty was among more than 12,500 participants who took part in Sunday’s Brighton Marathon 26.2-mile course, now in its 15th year.

Battling through windy conditions on an otherwise beautiful sunny day, she crossed the finish line after six determined hours. The race began at Preston Park and finished at Hove Lawns.

“Every step was worth it,” said Betty after crossing the finish line. “Knowing that my run will help deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people access theatre, museums and galleries kept me going when it got tough.”

The £1,420 raised will fund captioning and subtitling services across the UK, helping many of the 18 million adults who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing to fully participate in arts and cultural events.

Betty’s motivation began when she worked with a deaf leader and saw first hand how proper access changes everything. She witnessed both the frustration when access was missing and the joy when it was provided.
