God and Cosmology: From Temple Chevallier to Stephen Hawking image
Synopsis:

Our Universe is full of mysteries that many have attempted to uncover, often turning to both science and religion to comprehend both what we can see and its unseen depths.

Join David Wilkinson to celebrate 100 years of Science at Durham University. He will share the story of the remarkable life of Victorian astronomer Temple Chevallier, one of the founders of the Durham University Observatory.  Such work laid the basis of an explosion of interest in the 20th century in, for example, Stephen Hawking’s ground-breaking research on black holes and the Big Bang and in current work in Durham in both cosmology and theology.

Reverend Professor David Wilkinson is the former Principal of St John’s College, and a Professor in the Department of Theology and Religion at Durham University. He has doctorates in astrophysics and theology and is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Chaired by Professor Martin Ward, Durham University.
