Philippe Sands at the Royal Society

Join us for Cara’s annual Science and Civilisation lecture with Philippe Sands, as he discusses Science, Law and International Courts.
The Royal Society and the Council for At-Risk Academics (Cara) invite you to join us for an evening with renowned international lawyer and author Philippe Sands, author of East-West Street (2016) and The Ratline (2020). His lecture On Science, Law, and International Courts will address the challenges of dealing with competing arguments about science in the context of litigation before the International Court of Justice. It will draw on Philippe’s own experience in litigating the first environmental case at the Court in 1997, on to the breakthrough case in 2012 in which the Court grappled with the scientific evidence around whaling, and through to the Advisory Opinion on Climate that is being heard at the Court in December 2024.
The session will include a Q&A and will be followed by a drinks reception.
