Take a car ride through Manchester in this immersive play about family secrets, Irish history and the IRA
In September 1996 – after the IRA detonated a bomb in Manchester city centre – Jonathan’s father told him about his family history while on a car journey. His grandfather Frank was imprisoned after the Easter Rising and the Civil War, undertaking a 45-day hunger strike. Suddenly, Jonathan’s idea of terrorists was turned upside down: they were family.
Where It Happened is a brand-new immersive theatre piece that takes place on a car ride to the spot where the bomb went off. Accompany Jonathan through Manchester, as he creates a portrait of his grandfather and explores the impact of English occupation on Ireland, its people and its culture.
Jonathan got into the car that day as an English teenager who told Irish jokes to fit in; when he got out, he was a sworn-to-secrecy Irish Republican. Join Jonathan on his journey of discovery, as he unpicks what makes a terrorist and the impact of generational trauma. Where It Happened isn’t interested in the violence but in why it happened.
